Experts say that if one-third of the interior of the tree is rotten, it should be removed.

3. Inspect if all dead branches are on one side of the tree only or otherwise. In case all the dead branches are on one side, it must be lopsided. Know that dead branches that are located in one side of the tree only may indicate a root or trunk damage on the affected side. In this case, have it be evaluated by a professional.

4. Know the history of the tree. It is true that there are some pruning jobs that can cause problems later on. Apart from that, another reason why trees decline is the change in the soil level over the root system. Be aware that when 3 inches or more of soil has been piled up over the roots of the tress, most probably, it will die.

5. Check if there are sprouts coming from the base of the tree. If indeed there are, know that these are a response to sever stress which indicates that there is something wrong with the tree. To be sure, get expert help.
